Teachers and test creators can use the Test Details page to view, edit, and schedule an assessment. The actions you can take depend on:
Your system may be configured to use either "Test" or "Assessment" on certain user interface labels, such as the Test Settings tab on this page. The documentation uses Test.
To access the Test Details page:
Do not attempt to reschedule a completed test; the Edit Schedule link remains available to view the scheduling information. Always copy a test to reschedule it.
You can use the first two tabs to view and manage test items:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Select Standards | Select or change the standards associated with the test. See Select Standards. The associated standards are listed in the Test Standards area along with a count of aligned items. Click the search icon next to a standard to search Item Banks for additional items aligned to that standard. |
| Item Distribution | Click to show the number of each item type (True/False, Multiple Choice, etc.) included on the test. |
| View Rigor Measure | Select the rigor measure to display in the item list: Authored Difficulty, Bloom's Taxonomy, or Webb. |
| Add Instructions | For tests that are private drafts and public drafts, click Add Instructions or Edit Instructions to provide specific guidelines to students for the test. For tests with the Text to Speech accommodation enabled, the playback buttons will be available on the Test Instructions page for tests that have instructions. |
| Customize Item Numbers | Allows you to apply custom numbers or labels to test items if your test has not yet been scheduled. There are two ways to define custom item numbers:
|
| Customize Answer Choices | Two options are available, one for odd and one for even questions. Choose the letter to start the odd questions and a letter to start the even questions. Answer choices will continue in alphabetical order from the letters you choose. The letter "i" will not appear as an answer choice, and the letter "t" is the last letter that will appear (i.e., the letters u-z will not appear as answer choices). Custom answer choice apply only to multiple choice questions. |
| Delete Multiple Items | Activates checkboxes next to all questions. Select the checkboxes by the questions you would like to delete, and then click Delete Selected Items. Use caution when selecting the questions you would like to delete. There is no confirmation when clicking Delete. |
| Copy Multiple Items | Only appears on the Item Detail tab. Click to copy one or more items to a new or existing test. |
| Add All Items to Item Bank |
For test items that were created on the test (not in an item bank), click this link to add the items to a bank, and then select the bank. This action is available only when a test is Finalized or later. This action will not update items added to the test from a bank and then edited for the test.
This action appears at the bottom of the list of items. |
| Item Actions | Description |
|---|---|
| View | View item details including the properties and item statistics that may be associated with the item. See Item Detail or Item Statistics for more information. |
| Edit | Depending upon the test stage and item type, item creators or others with appropriate permissions can make changes to subject, grade level, language, standardRefers to a set of skills students or educators must learn to be considered proficient in a given course of study. The term may refer to a granular level of a standard, such as a skill, indicator, or performance objective. Standards exist at national, state, and local (district or school) levels. or standards, language category, change type, content, answer(s), points worth (including up to two decimal places), correct responses, explanations, instructions, activities and optional information. For items aligned to more than one standard, an All Alignments link appears. Click on that link to view a list of all standards aligned to the test item. When editing items that have been added to a test, changes are only made to the test and will not appear in the school district bank. If the item has been imported as part of a Benchmark test, it is not stored as an individual item in your bank; it is only viewable as a part of the test and cannot be copied, edited, or used in other tests. |
| Delete | Delete the item from the test. This option appears only for items that are not in an item bank. For items in a bank, you will see the Remove from Test option. |
| Replace | Replace the item on a test with another item from an item bank. The search filters will default to the subject, grade level, and standards defined for the item being replaced. Click Select Banks to search for an item from a specific bank or banks. Depending on the type of test and your permissions, there may be limitations on replacing items on a test. |
| Modify | Modifications can be made to the point value, correct answer, standards and weights. For items aligned to more than one standard, an All Alignments link appears. Click on that link to view a list of all standards aligned to the test item. Test modification does not affect the administration of the test. However, it is recommended that all modifications be completed while test is in the Ready to Schedule (Ready) stage to ensure data collection reporting is accurate. |
| Add to Item Bank | For items that were created on a test (not in an item bank), click this link to add the item to a bank. This action is available only when a test is Scheduled, In Progress, or Completed. |

On the Test Settings tab, you can view or define test restrictions, accommodations, score groups, test item defaults, and test properties.
In the Restrictions area, you can view or edit the test restrictions for educators and parents/students. Users with the appropriate operations can bypass these restrictions.
For Educators. The following options are available only if you have the View Content and Manage Restricted Tests operation and can create State, District, or Region benchmark tests. Note that for State tests, district, region, and school users will be subject to all selected test restrictions regardless of their operations.
| Restriction | Description |
|---|---|
| Prevent viewing item content | Prevents viewing item content and when the restriction will apply. When you select this option, the Prevent copying test or test items restriction is automatically applied as well to protect test content from being exposed. When you select the Except From option and enter start and end dates, the restriction applies from the beginning of the day on the start date to the end of the day on the end date. Caution: Deselecting either of the following scoring restrictions below will allow users to see test content on the Score page. |
| Prevent copying test or test items | Prevents the test or any test items from being copied. Protects test content from being exposed. |
| Prevent editing student responses | Select when the restriction will apply. |
| Prevent deleting student responses | Select when the restriction will apply. |
| Prevent scoring open response questions | Select when the restriction will apply. |
| Restrict Item Analysis, Data Collection Report, and Export Test Results for this test | Prevents viewing of item analysis information and the Data Collection Report, and also prevents exporting test results from all areas. |
For Parents and Students. The following options are available for all tests and test creators. These options are progressively restrictive, and only one option can be selected. The selected restrictions will be respected in the Student Profile and Review a Test widget.
| Restriction | Description |
|---|---|
| No restriction | No restrictions are applied to parents and students. |
| Show correctness for student responses only | Shows only the correctness of a student's selected response. If a student selects the wrong answer, the correct answer will not be identified. All item content and answer choices will be visible. |
| Hide correct answers | Hides correct answers when viewing test results during the selected time period (or always). |
| Restrict access to item content and answer choices | Restricts access to item content and answer choices while leaving student responses and correctness visible. |
| Prevent access to test details, correctness, standards analysis, item content, and answer choices | If the item analysis restriction for educators is applied, this option will be selected by default, but it can be applied independently of the educator setting. Only the test name, test score, and score group will be available to parents and students. |
| Hide test from Student Profile | Hides the test and test results from parents and students on the Benchmark Tests and Classroom Tests tabs of the Student Profile. |
In the Accommodations area, you can view or edit student accommodations used on the test.
Online tests support a number of student accommodations, such as Text to Speech. Certain accommodations can be enabled for a test, and other accommodations can only be enabled for a student in their Personal Needs Profile (PNP) in their student profile by users with the Update TestNav PNP operation. See Student Accommodations for a full list of accommodations. You can view the accommodations that were available to a student for a test on the Track Accommodations page. Teachers with active sections and users with the View Track Accommodations operation can view this page.
The Text to Speech accommodation must be enabled in both Test Settings and a student's PNP settings. Other accommodations can be enabled either here or in a student's PNP.
| Accommodation | Description |
|---|---|
| Line Reader |
Allows students to use a line reader to help students focus on selected text by blocking surrounding text. The line reader can be adjusted to focus on a single line, multiple lines, or just a few words. Available in PNP and Test Settings. If the line reader is enabled in Test Settings, it will be available on a test regardless of a student's PNP.
|
| Magnifier | Allows students to use a magnifier. Students can drag the magnifier to view different areas of the test question. Available on PNP and Test Settings. If the magnifier is enabled in Test Settings, it will be available on a test regardless of a student's PNP. |
| Text to Speech | Important: Text to Speech must be enabled in both Test Settings and a student's PNP to be available for a student. Reads question content aloud to students. Test item creators can enter alternate text to be read for a word, math equation, image, audio file, or table. For tables, alternate text can be entered for content within the table or the entire table (in Table Properties). If alternate text is entered for both, only the alt text for the entire table will be read. Test instructions, question text, passages, answer choices, and task instructions and activity headings will be read to the student. Labels will be read for Gap Match, Inline Response, and Hotspot items. Text to Speech playback buttons will appear on the right side of the screen in TestNav. A male or female voice can be selected, and reading speed can be made slower or faster. The Click to Hear (middle) button allows students to select a specific line of text to hear. The playback buttons will be available on the Test Instructions page for tests that have instructions. The Text to Speech feature may not always pronounce words correctly. Refer to the phonetic guide and use alternate text to improve pronunciation. Alternate text can also be used to describe math equations, images, audio files, and tables. In Test Settings, English or Spanish pronunciation can be selected. The test-level setting will override the item-level Question Language. This setting determines only the pronunciation of question content; it does not translate question content. A warning message will appear if the test and item settings differ. Text to Speech is not supported with the scramble answer choice functionality.
|
| Enable TTS for Passages | In Test Settings, enable text to speech for passages. The Text To Speech accommodation must be selected first. This does not require Text to Speech to be enabled on a student's PNP. |
Click Override Default Cut Scores to manually enter the cut-off point for each score group. For example, you could make the cut-off for "Needs Improvement" 50%, the cut-off for "Average" 70%, and the cut-off for "Good" 80%, with anything above 80% considered "Great." Although you enter even numbers for cut-off points, the actual cut-off points are just below what you enter. For example, a score of 69.9% would be in the "Average" score group, but a score of 70% would be in the "Good" score group.
Advanced users may want to change the minimum scores that students must receive in order to achieve a specific proficiency level. This is useful for evaluating tests that may have been harder or easier than average.
For prior-year tests that use archived score groups, you will see the message "This text uses archived score groups." You cannot change the cut scores for archived score groups. If the prior-year test uses custom score groups, the Override checkbox will be selected and the custom score groups displayed. You cannot uncheck the Override checkbox or change the existing custom score groups.
In the Test Item Defaults area, you can view the default item settings defined for the test. Click Edit to change the item defaults. When editing Test Item Defaults, select whether to Use Item Settings defined at the item level or to define the setting for here for all test items.
Open Response Text Formatting: Simple text formatting allows students to enter text without the text formatting toolbar available. Rich text formatting allows students to use the text formatting toolbar. With rich text, you can also give students access to Spell Check (for English only) or the Special Character Palette (for French and Spanish only). Select Equation Editor to allow students to enter their answer as an equation, and then select an appropriate grade level and editor.
In the Properties area, you can view or edit the test properties defined for the test. The following properties are listed in the order in which they appear in the Edit Test Properties popup. The order is slightly different on the Test Settings tab.
| Test Property | Description |
|---|---|
| Test Name | The Test Name can be changed when the test is in the Private Draft or Public Draft stage. |

The TestNav Score Summary page and Score page in Schoolnet will reflect the correct score based on this setting. For example, if a test is set to exclude unanswered questions, and a student answered 3 out 5 questions correctly but did not answer two questions, the score will be shown as 100% on the TestNav Score Summary page and on the Score page. |
| Test Focus | ELA, Reading, or Writing. Available only for English subject, for reporting purposes. |
| Item/Passage Default Font | Applies to online tests and test booklets. Select a default font for items and passages on the test. Custom item and passage font settings will override the test settings. Only fonts supported in TestNav are supported. Labels in TestNav will use the standard font, not the default font selected here. The default fonts defined for a test will be maintained even if the system-level default fonts are changed. The following fonts will not be maintained when exported to Word: Andale Mono, Helvetica, and Terminal. These fonts will be converted to a default font. |

| Hide Teacher Names and Section Information on Answer Sheets | Select whether to hide teacher names and section information on answer sheets. |
| Capture Teacher Comments on Answer Sheets | Select Yes to add space on the printed answer sheets for teacher comments. This option is automatically set to No and may only be updated prior to scheduling a test. |
| Enable Student Self-Assessment | Allows students can perform a self-assessment so they can compare their open response answers to specific scoring criteria for each question, and then assign their own score. This helps students to understand how well they met the goals for each question and to think critically about their answers. Teachers will see self-assessment scores and comments when scoring the test. |
| Enable Printing | Select the printing options available to teachers. Test booklets can be printed in PDF or Word, and other options in PDF. |
| Answer Sheet Scanning | Select whether to allow answer sheet scanning with a document scanner (using the Answer Sheet Scanning feature). |
| Enable Student Comments | Allows students to enter or update comments about the test and/or items. Select to allow students to either Comment at the end of the test, to Comment on each item, or leave blank to remove student comments for the test. This item setting cannot be changed once the test is scheduled. These comments display on the Score page. |
On the Downloads & Resources tab, you can download test documents, such as the student test booklet, and add associated resources.
| Download | Description |
|---|---|
