Test Detail
Administrators and teachers can use the Test Detail page to view and manage a test. Depending on the state of the test, from here you can schedule a test, copy a test, view and edit test properties and defaults, add an item to a test, preview a test, and more. The current state of the test (Ready to Schedule, In Progress, and so on) will appear at the top of the page. For scheduled tests, the test passcode that students use to start the test will appear. When assessments have been integrated with PowerTeacher Gradebook, a status message also displays and includes the sharing status as well as the date/time updates were last sent to the Gradebook. If any errors occur in synchronizing changes to this data, a detailed error message will appear.
When accessing Test Detail for a co-authored test, the Last Updated By information will display, and Co-Authoring Settings are available, which allow users to view and edit the existing co-authors and co-author folder. Co-authored tests can also be shared with Test Central directly from Test Detail. Co-authored tests that are being edited in Test Detail are not available to co-authors until editing is complete.
If your test is linked to an assignment in a LMS such as Canvas, itslearning, or Brightspace, you will see a notification at the top of the Test Detail page. Upload Scores, answer sheet printing, answer sheet scanning, and some test scheduling options are not available for tests linked to an assignment in a LMS. Also, tests linked to a LMS assignment must be taken in the designated LMS.
In the list of test items, the color of the left border of an item or task activity indicates the following: red indicates errors, orange indicates warnings, and green indicates no issues.
Go to at Assessments > Find for Tests to quickly see whether a test is published to TestNav, in the process of being published, or is not yet published. You can publish tests from Test Central or Test Detail.
To view or edit test details
- Go to Assessments > Find for Tests.
- Enter the search criteria, and then click Go, or click Advanced Search.
- Click a test to go the Test Detail page.
- The top of the page shows the test stage: Private Draft, Public Draft, Ready to Schedule, Scheduled, In Progress, or Completed. From here, you can:
- Make Public: For a test in the Private Draft stage, click this button to move it to the Public Draft stage. Only tests in the Private and Public Draft stages can be fully edited. Tests in a later stage can be modified to a lesser extent.
- Ready to Schedule: For a test in the Public Draft stage, click this button move the test to the Schedule state.
- Schedule: For a test in the Ready to Schedule stage, click this button to schedule the test for students to take. After the test is schedule, the online passcode that students use to take the test will appear.
- For tests that are private drafts and public drafts, you can click Add Instructions/Edit Instructions to provide students specific guidelines regarding the test. Once added, the instructions are also included on copies of the test but can be edited for drafts. For tests with the Text to Speech accommodation enabled, the playback buttons will be available on the Test Instructions page for tests that have instructions.
- For tests that are scheduled, in progress, or completed, you can expand the Assessment Notes to add or view notes regarding the assessment. These notes allows teachers and administrators to comment on the use and effectiveness of the assessment. Notes can be deleted only by the comment creator or a system operator.
- Expand the test settings in the left navigation pane to view or edit them. See Test settings in the left navigation pane below for details.
- Click the Add Item button to add a test item to a test that is in the Private or Public Draft stage. You can search for an existing item in an Item Bank, or select an item type to create a new item.
- Click the Edit Items button edit a test that is in the Private or Public Draft stage. Click the Modify Items button modify tests are Ready to Schedule or later.
- Click the Actions button next to a test item to perform one of several actions. See Item Actions below for details. Under Actions, click Preview Test as Student to verify that the test appears as expected. In preview, you can enter answers and verify that scoring works correctly. For each test item, you will see any unresolved alerts or warnings under the Actions button. Some alerts must be resolved before a test can be scheduled. See Edit Items for more information.
- For tests that have been scheduled but not yet published to TestNav, click the Publish to TestNav button at the top of the page (this button is only available when a test needs to be published). Students cannot take a test, and teachers will not be able to generate answer sheets or access the Score page until after a test is published. If a test is modified after it is published, you will need to republish the test.
Do not republish a test while students are currently taking the test online or errors may occur. When republishing a test, a warning will appear if students have pending test sessions, which indicates they may have an active test session. From the warning message, you can export a list of pending students.
Test settings in the left navigation pane
The following table describes the test settings your can view or modify in the left navigation pane.
- Copy Test: Takes you to the Create Manual Test page where you can edit and save a copy of the existing test. All questions, answers, points, standards, and other settings that were used on the other test are copied. If the test you copied was linked to an assignment in a LMS, the copy will not be linked, but you can link it at a later time. Click Generate Test to create a private draft of the copied test. If you want to reschedule a completed test, make a copy of the test and schedule the copy.
- Export Test: Export this test for transfer to another system, which allows it to be shared and re-used. Only Schoolnet authored, complete tests, with complete test items are eligible for export. Tests that contain items with any critical alerts cannot be exported. Answer key only tests cannot be exported. The type of equation editor selected for student responses is preserved on export.
- Force Publication: Publish the test from Schoolnet to TestNav to ensure the test is the same in both systems. This link is only available to users with the Force publication operation, which is limited to leaders and system operators. This is the same functionality as the Publish to TestNav button at the top of the page, but is available so that a test can be published if needed when the normal publication options are not available. Do not republish a test while students are currently taking it. If a test is currently being published, it cannot be republished until the process is complete. The action is available only when the level at which the operation is assigned (school or district) matches the level of the test. This means that principals can't force publication of district tests.
- Delete this test: Test owners can completely remove the test from the system. This option is not available for In Process tests.
- View Audit Log: System operators and users who have rights to schedule or modify a test can view an audit log of changes made to the test after it is scheduled. This link is available only for test categories that are configured to use audit logging. The audit log lists the date, the action that was taken, and the user who made the change. Actions that are logged include publishing the test; saving test items, passages, and rubrics; modifying the test assignment; and saving the test schedule (whether or not changes were made). Changes to test instructions and adding or removing associated resources are not logged.
- Preview Answer Sheets: Generates a sample PDF answer sheet you can verify before scheduling the test. This link is available only when a test is in Private or Public Draft. The sample answer sheet shows "Do Not Scan" in place of the QR code, includes a PREVIEW watermark across the page, and uses gray text. The test name and ID will appear, but no other real data, such as student or teacher information, will appear.
- Answer Sheets: Generates a PDF answer sheet you can download and print. Answer sheets are pre-slugged with the student name, teacher name, school name, test information, and answer bubbles. The answer sheet may contain a Teacher Use Only section for teachers to add comments for students and parents on open response questions. The zip file and answer sheets use the following filenames: TestID_answersheet.zip and TestID_answersheet1of2.pdf.
- Score Test: Add or edit test scores for an individual student or section. The option to score a test may be not be available depending on your roles and operations or restrictions that have been applied to the test.
- Scan Answer Sheets: Open the Answer Sheet Scanning solution to scan answer sheets for assessments that are Scheduled or In Progress. Only scanning with document cameras is supported. This link appears only if Answer Sheet Scanning is used in your system. The link may be grayed out if Answer Sheet Scanning is not enabled for the assessment you are viewing.
- View Usernames: Click to search for students who have been assigned to take the test. The Student Name, Student ID, User Name, and Password are shown.
- Track Accommodations: Click to view accommodations assigned when a student completed the test. This option becomes available after a test is Scheduled, In Progress, or Completed. See Track Accommodations for details. This option will appear if you have the View Track Accommodations operation, are a teacher with active sections, or for tests you create and administer (the operation is not needed in the last two cases).
- Preview Test as Student: Preview the test to see it as a student will. Only the accommodations selected for the assessment or items will appear. If a warning symbol appears next to the preview link, there are one or more compatibility issues with TestNav. Click the link to see the list of issues. In preview, you can enter answers and verify that scoring works correctly.
- Generate Text to Speech: Click the link to start the Text to Speech conversion process for tests so that you can preview tests that use the Text to Speech accommodation (the link will not appear if the Text to Speech test property is not enabled in Test Properties). If you do not generate Text to Speech content now, it will be generated when the test is published to TestNav. This process can take several minutes, so it is best to wait until the test is ready for students before running this process. You will not be able to preview the test while the process is running. You will receive a notification when the process is complete, and the action link will change to "Text to Speech content is ready". If you change the question content during or after the Text to Speech conversion, the "Generate Text to Speech" link will reappear and you will need to run the conversion process again. The link will be disabled if the test is in the Scheduled or In Progress state; republishing will automatically regenerate Text to Speech content. DO NOT republish a test while students are currently taking a test or errors may occur.
- Student Test Booklet: Download the student test booklet in PDF or .DOCX (Word) format to print for offline testing. Tests containing images and technology-enhanced items, such as drag and drop, can be printed for students who do not have access to a computer.
- Scoring Instructions: Download instructions for scoring open response test items.
- Cover sheet: Print a cover sheet. This action is not available for tests with technology-enhanced items.
- Answer Key: Download the answer key to manually score the test. Answer keys can be downloaded for tests with any item type, including technology-enhanced items such as Gap Match. The correct answer for technology-enhanced items will be shown as N/A, and the item type will be indicated. A column for Webb's DOK is included.
- Teacher Instructions: Generate a PDF or Word document containing instructions for teachers administering test items. This option is only available if any test items contain teacher instructions.
- Test Rubrics: Download rubric details for all rubrics that are aligned to the test.
- Exemplars: Download Exemplars entered or attached on open response questions. The PDF will include all text entered in the Exemplars field and list the file names of any attached files. The ZIP file will include the PDF and all attachments.
- Proctor Dashboard: Teachers can view real-time, color-coded student responses to the test, see a class distribution of students by test stage (Not Started, In Progress, and Completed), and link to individual student score pages for submitted tests.
- Download Results: State and district system operators can download the test and student data in CSV format, which allows the data to be utilized by third-party analysis software. Access to this feature is dependent upon your user role. You can verify your roles and operations by clicking My Account and checking the Roles and Operations tab.
- Upload Statistics: State and district system operators can upload the test and student data in CSV format, which allows the data to be viewed from within the system. Access to this feature is dependent upon your user role. You can verify your roles and operations by clicking My Account and checking the Roles and Operations tab.
- Student Comments: Click to view any comments students have made for the test or test items. For more information, see Student Comments. This link will not appear unless Student Comments have been enabled for this test.
- Data Collection Report: Click to view a summary of students who have started and not started the test. For more information, see Track Test Completion. The data collection threshold means that a minimum percentage of eligible students (defined in system configuration) have completed the test.
- Export Test Results: Click to export all of the test results to a CSV file, including student responses and points. This link appears only if results exist for the test and if no test restrictions are currently in place. Student results will appear only if you have access to the student's profile. If you have the Add/Update Student Responses operation at an institution, all students at that institution will be included. For Open Response items, the results will indicate No Response or Response Provided. When the Prevent tests from appearing in item analysis test restriction is enabled, users will not be able to export test results unless they have permission to view restricted test content.
- If you use PowerTeacher Gradebook, you can:
- Refresh Now: Update sharing status between Schoolnet and PowerTeacher Gradebook.
- Share Now: Upon test completion, scores are sent directly to the Gradebook for assigned sections. Once a test has been shared with the Gradebook, click Edit Sharing Settings and select the sharing option best for the test.
- Edit Schedule and Settings: Update the test schedule and settings to enable sharing with the Gradebook. Tests must be scheduled and assigned to sections.
- This option only appears if your district uses PowerTeacher Gradebook.
- If you use PowerTeacher Gradebook, you can see the status of tests you have shared with Gradebook. If any errors occurred in sharing tests with Gradebook, you will also see those errors.
View test schedule information. Click Edit Schedule and Settings to update schedule options. This option is not available for co-authored tests. If you use Gradebook, you will see a checkbox that you can select to turn on Gradebook sharing.
Co-Authoring Settings
View or edit co-authoring settings.
Associated Resources
Shows resource files, such as PDFs, attached to the test. Click Add New Resource to attach a new resource. These files are available as resources for educators. Students will not have access to them.
Select a file and enter a display name (file name). Alphanumeric and common special characters are supported.
Click Change Defaults to edit the Test Item Defaults, and click Save to save any changes. For each option, select whether to Use Item Settings defined at the item level or to use the global test item settings defined here.
-
Open Response Text Formatting - Simple text formatting allows students to enter text without the text formatting toolbar available. Rich text formatting allows students to use the text formatting toolbar. With rich text, you can also give students access to Spell Check (for English only) or the Special Character Palette (for French and Spanish only). Select Equation Editor to allow students to enter their answer as an equation, and then select an appropriate grade level and editor.
- Answer Choice Layout- Provides the option to choose a table layout for the multiple choice/checklist test questions and answers. This option allows those schools and districts that use a table layout for multiple choice/checklist items to choose the required layout. Multiple choice two-columns layouts (down, then across and across, then down) are now supported in tests administered in TestNav.)
- Answer Choice Positioning- For Gap Match and Graphic Gap Match items, you can select where answer choices will appear in the question content (top, bottom, left, or right). For example, answer choices will appear at the bottom of the question (below the question and gaps) if you select bottom. For questions with vertically oriented (side-by-side) passages, left or right positioning will be ignored, and top will be used instead.
- Gridded Answer Entry- Select how gridded test questions will appear in TestNav for the test, or select to Use Item Settings. The Bubble Grid option displays a bubble layout similar to a printed answer sheet, and the Text Box option displays a single text box in which students can enter their answer.
- Enable Tools & Manipulatives - Allows tools and manipulatives to be used on both online and printed tests. When you select this option, you can select the specific tools and manipulatives you want to include on a test. Select whether to Use Item Settings defined at the item level or to use the global test settings defined here. For more information, see Tools and Manipulatives.
- Apply these settings to the existing test items - Select this option to apply any revised settings to existing test items. If you do not select this option, their existing settings will continue to be used, but any new test items will inherit the new settings.
Test Restrictions
View or select the test content restrictions for educators and parents/students. Users with the appropriate operations can bypass these restrictions.
For Educators. The following options are available only if you have the View Content and Manage Restricted Tests operation and can create State, District, or Region benchmark tests. Note that for State tests, district, region, and school users will be subject to all selected test restrictions regardless of their operations.
- Prevent viewing item content - Prevents viewing item content and when the restriction will apply. When you select this option, the Prevent copying test or test items restriction is automatically applied as well to protect test content from being exposed. When you select the Except From option and enter start and end dates, the restriction applies from the beginning of the day on the start date to the end of the day on the end date.
Caution: Deselecting either of the following scoring restrictions below will allow users to see test content on the Score page.
- Prevent copying test or test items - Prevents the test or any test items from being copied. Protects test content from being exposed.
- Prevent editing or deleting student responses - Select when the restriction will apply.
- Prevent scoring open response questions - Select when the restriction will apply.
- Restrict Item Analysis, Data Collection Report, and Export Test Results for this assessment - Prevents viewing of item analysis information and the Data Collection Report, and also prevents exporting test results from all areas.
For Parents and Students. The following options are available for all tests and test creators. These options are progressively restrictive, and only one option can be selected. The selected restrictions will be respected in the Student Profile and Review a Test widget.
- No restrictions - No restrictions are applied to parents and students.
- Hide correct answers - Hides correct answers when viewing test results during the selected time period (or always).
- Restrict access to item content and answer choices - Restricts access to item content and answer choices while leaving student responses and correctness visible.
- Restrict access to test details, correctness, standards analysis, item content, and answer choices - If the item analysis restriction for educators is applied, this option will be selected by default, but it can be applied independently of the educator setting. Only the test name, test score, and score group will be available to parents and students.
- Hide test from Student Profile - Hides the test and test results from parents and students on the Benchmark Tests and Classroom Tests tabs of the Student Profile.
Item Actions
Click the Actions button next to a test item to perform one of several actions. The actions you can take depend on your rights to the item bank.
View item details including the properties and item statistics that may be associated with the item. See Item Properties or Item Statistics for more information.
Depending upon the test stage and item type, item creators or others with appropriate permissions can make changes to subject, grade level, language, or standards, language category, change type, content, answer(s), points worth (including up to two decimal places), correct responses, explanations, instructions, activities and optional information. For items aligned to more than one standard, an All Alignments link appears. Click on that link to view a list of all standards aligned to the test item. When editing items that have been added to a test, changes are only made to the test and will not appear in the school district bank. If the item has been imported as part of a Benchmark test, it is not stored as an individual item in your bank; it is only viewable as a part of the test and cannot be copied, edited, or used in other tests.
Delete the item from the test. This option appears only for items that are not in an item bank. For items in a bank, you will see the Remove from Test option.
Replace the item on a test with another item from an item bank. The search filters will default to the subject, grade level, and standards defined for the item being replaced. Click Select Banks to search for an item from a specific bank or banks. Depending on the type of test and your permissions, there may be limitations on replacing items on a test.
Modifications can be made to the point value, correct answer, standards and weights. For items aligned to more than one standard, an All Alignments link appears. Click on that link to view a list of all standards aligned to the test item. Test modification does not affect the administration of the test. However, it is recommended that all modifications be completed while test is in the Ready to Schedule (Ready) stage to ensure data collection reporting is accurate.
For items that were created on a test (not in an item bank), click this link to add the item to a bank. This action is available only when a test is Scheduled, In Progress, or Completed.
Remove the item from the test. Removes the item from the test, but not from the item bank.
When an online test is timed, select Timer Off to pause the test while students respond to the item. The test clock resumes after students advance to an item where Timer Off is not selected. This option can only be selected when the test is in the Private Draft and Public Draft stage.
Add All Items to Item Bank
If a test has items that were created on the test (not in an item bank), click this link to add the items to a bank, and then select the bank. This action is available only when a test is Scheduled, In Progress, or Completed. This action will not update items added to the test from a bank and then edited for the test.
This action appears at the bottom of the list of items, not in the Action dropdown button.
