Tools and manipulatives, such as rulers and calculators, can be enabled for students to use tests. To enable a tool or manipulative on a test, the Enable Tools & Manipulatives test property must be set to Yes, and the specific tools and manipulatives used on the test must be selected (formula sheets are an exception; they will always appear when attached to a test itemA test question, such as True/False, Matching, Open Response, and so on. Test items can be created in Assessment Admin or imported through the QTI import process.). Tools and manipulatives can also be defined on individual test items and will be used when the Use Item Settings option is selected for a test.
For online tests, a toolbar with buttons for each tool will appear if tools and manipulatives are enabled for the test. Students can drag a tool to a new location and rotate certain tools. On printed tests, students will use their own tools. Test item creators are responsible to make sure that images are scaled correctly on printed tests.
When manipulatives are used on a test, images displayed in TestNav and printed test booklets will not be scaled by the system, and will display at the resolution at which they were inserted into the test. This ensures that measurements taken with manipulatives are accurate.
The following tools and manipulatives are supported in TestNav. When previewing a test or item, all selected tools and manipulatives will appear as they would on a student's test.
Rulers
Tools
Calculators
Texas Instruments calculators (if used in your system)
The TI calculators can be enabled for State, Region, District, or School level assessments. They cannot be enabled for private My Classroom tests.
Desmos Calculators (if used in your system)
To make formulas, the periodic table, units of measure, etc. available to students on a test, attach a formula sheet when creating or editing a test item. Formula sheets can be PDF, PNG, GIF, or JPG files up to 8 MB in size. Tools and manipulatives do not need to be enabled for formula sheets to appear on a test. Formula sheets will always appear for test items where they are attached.
For students using an iPad to take a test, if a formula sheet is a PDF with more than one page, only the first page of the PDF will be visible. This is a known issue with iPads.
